WE BELIEVE

A Capital Campaign

Expanding Healing, Connection, and Community for Lasting Mental Wellness

Healing Happens in Community

Why "We Believe"

The James P. Harrington Organization (JPH) has launched the $5 million We Believe Capital Campaign — a five-year public campaign to expand JPH’s capacity to respond to growing demand for accessible mental health, community healing, and workforce-support programming on the South Shore. Early support has already generated over $1 million in commitments.

Mental health isn’t just about clinical care. While therapy and professional support are important, many people experience mental health challenges driven by loneliness, lack of connection, and limited opportunities for meaningful engagement before a crisis happens. Traditional mental health care often focuses on treating individuals after they reach crisis points — rather than strengthening connection, belonging, and community supports that help people thrive every day.

“We’re not just in a mental health crisis — we’re in a human connection crisis.” This insight underscores the importance of community-based solutions that complement clinical care with programs that foster belonging, meaning, purpose, and peer support.

Human Connection Crisis

The Need

Mental Health, Connection & Community Healing Across the U.S., mental wellbeing challenges are widespread: - 1 in 5 Americans live with a mental health condition, and many live in areas with too few providers. - For every one therapist available, there are about 350 people seeking support. - Clinical care systems — while essential — alone cannot meet demand, and many people don’t seek help until a crisis occurs.

At the same time, research and innovation indicate that connection, peer support, mentorship, physical activity, and everyday human interaction can have powerful effects on wellbeing — often as meaningful as formal clinical care.

Human Connection Crisis

Why Connection & Community Healing Are Essential

Connection Impacts the Brain & Body - Exercise boosts dopamine - Eye contact and touch release oxytocin - Sunlight stimulates serotonin Healthy relationships increase all three — factors that support mood regulation and resilience.

When connection is missing, people experience loneliness and isolation that worsen anxiety, depression, substance use, and overall mental strain — not because individuals lack resilience, but because ecosystems of belonging are weak or absent.

Community-Led Support Extends Care Organizations working beyond traditional therapy — like peer support groups, mentorship networks, and community wellness programs — improve outcomes and help people thrive before reaching acute crisis levels. This holistic approach parallels JPH’s model of wellbeing, which blends therapeutic, nature-based, and community programs.

Our Capital Campaign

Building a Foundation for Healing, Growth and Community

This campaign is an investment in both place and people. While it strengthens our physical campus, it also ensures we can sustainably deliver life changing mental health and wellness programming for years to come.

  •

    Paying Down Property Debt

A primary goal of this campaign is to eliminate over $1 million in existing property debt.

By reducing this burden, we ensure long term stability, allowing more resources to directly support programming instead of servicing debt. This is a critical step in protecting the future of our organization and the community we serve.

  •

    Essential Capital Improvements
Our property is deeply loved and well used, but much of the infrastructure is aging and in need of attention.

    Campaign funds will support:

    • Upgraded plumbing systems to replace outdated pipes

    • New siding to protect and preserve our buildings

    • Structural and safety improvements across the campus

    • Ongoing maintenance that honors the history and integrity of the property

    •

These improvements ensure a safe, welcoming, and functional environment for all who come here to heal and grow.

  •

    Expanding Our Team

As demand for our programs continues to grow, so does the need for skilled, compassionate support staff.

    Funding will allow us to:

    • Add key mental health and wellness staff

    • Support program facilitators and coordinators

    • Increase accessibility to services for individuals and families

    •

This investment ensures that every participant receives the care, attention, and guidance they deserve.

  •

    Culinary Workforce and Wellness Kitchen

Food is a powerful tool for connection, confidence, and healing.

This campaign will fund the transformation of our kitchen into a fully equipped teaching space that will:

    • Support culinary workforce development

    • Provide hands on learning opportunities

    • Offer therapeutic cooking programs for individuals working on their mental health

    • Create a gathering space rooted in nourishment and community
