WE BELIEVE
The JPH Organization Capital Campaign
Preserving a place of healing and investing in the long-term care of a property where mental wellness, connection, and community can continue to grow for generations to come.
Why We Exist
The James P. Harrington Organization (JPH) is a community with a peaceful, retreat-like space where individuals and families can come together to focus on their mental wellbeing, connect with others, and access free and low-cost holistic programs, classes, and family support services. Through community, structured support, and workforce pathways, JPH helps people build confidence, strengthen family systems, develop skills, and move forward with purpose and independence.
HEALING | COMMUNITY
Why "We Believe" Matters
The James P. Harrington Organization (JPH) has launched the $5 million We Believe Capital Campaign, a five-year public effort to expand its ability to meet the growing need for accessible mental health, community healing, and workforce support programming on the South Shore. Early support has already secured over $1 million in commitments.
Mental health is not only about clinical care. While therapy and professional support are essential, many challenges are rooted in loneliness, lack of connection, and limited opportunities for meaningful engagement before a crisis occurs. Traditional systems often respond after people reach a breaking point rather than strengthening connection, belonging, and community support that help people thrive every day.
We are not just facing a mental health crisis, but a human connection crisis. This reality highlights the need for community-based solutions that work alongside clinical care to foster belonging, purpose, meaning, and peer support.

THE NEED
Mental Health, Connection, and Community Healing
Strengthening community-based support systems is a critical part of addressing the mental health challenges facing both individuals and families today.
-
1 in 5 adults in the United States experiences a mental health condition each year, yet nearly half do not receive any form of care.

-
1 in 6 youths ages 6 to 17 experiences a mental health disorder each year, and many go without the support they need during critical developmental years.

-
Nearly 60 percent of adults with a mental health condition report not seeking help due to stigma, fear, or shame.

-
70 percent of teens say anxiety and depression are major problems among their peers, yet many say they do not feel comfortable talking about it.

-
More than half of people living with mental health challenges say loneliness and lack of connection make their symptoms worse.

-
Individuals who feel a strong sense of belonging are significantly less likely to experience depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts.

-
Communities that foster connection and peer support can reduce the risk of mental health crises and improve long term wellbeing outcomes.

-
Studies show that supportive relationships and trusted community spaces can be as impactful as clinical interventions for improving overall wellbeing.

-
When people feel seen, heard, and valued, they are far more likely to seek help, stay engaged in care, and begin to heal.

Stories of Healing & Connection

I first came to JPH during one of the hardest chapters of my life. I was struggling with severe anxiety and navigating deep depression. I was doing it alone, isolating myself, disconnecting from any real sense of community or support. I knew I needed something more, but I didn’t know where to find it. From the moment I walked into JPH, I felt a shift. The space itself is welcoming, but it’s the people who make it transformative. I was met with kindness, compassion, and a level of understanding I hadn’t experienced in a long time.

JPH hasn’t just helped me heal; it has helped shape the path I’m now walking. Because of this organization, I found the courage and clarity to pursue becoming a healer myself. My life, my purpose, and the way I show up in the world have been transformed because of the support and opportunities this community has given me.

I have been blessed beyond all measure to be involved with an organization that’s soul benefit is the wellness and care for those struggling in the community. I found a place where my soul thrives and healing comes in many faces, movements and faith. Each month I sign up and participate in as many wellness programs as my energy and health allow.

This community loved me back to life. Today I share my story with pride, not shame. Today, I am 2.5 years sober Today, I can drive for the first time in 5 years Today, I have a full-time job using the skills this community taught me through their workforce program. JPH changed my life and they change countless others every day.

I came to JPH at a time when my life felt like it had fallen apart. I was unemployed, unsure of who I was anymore, and early in my sober journey — that phase where getting out of bed, showing up, and trying again feels like climbing a mountain every day. When a friend shared a volunteer post, I didn’t know if I was ready. But something in me said I needed to try something different. So I walked in. I remember that first day so clearly. I didn’t know anyone, I didn’t know what I was doing, and honestly, I didn’t know if I even belonged there. But for the first time in a long time, I felt… safe.

GROW | INVEST
Building a Foundation for Healing, Preservation, and Community
This campaign is an investment in both place and purpose. It ensures that our facility and property are not only paid for, but thoughtfully cared for and preserved for generations to come. At the same time, it strengthens our ability to sustainably offer life changing mental health and wellness programming in a setting that fosters connection, safety, and belonging.
Paying Down Property Debt and Ensuring Long Term Care
A central goal of this campaign is to eliminate over $1 million in existing property debt while establishing a strong foundation for ongoing stewardship of the land and facilities.
By relieving this burden, we ensure that the property itself can be fully sustained and protected. This allows resources to be directed toward care, preservation, and mission-driven programming rather than debt obligations.
This effort ensures that our home remains a stable, secure, and enduring place for healing and community.
Honoring the Land and Facilities
Our property is deeply loved and actively used, and with that comes the responsibility to preserve and protect it with care and intention.
Campaign funds will support:
-
Upgraded plumbing systems to replace outdated infrastructure
-
New siding to protect and extend the life of our buildings
-
Structural and safety improvements across the campus
-
Ongoing maintenance and beautification that honors the integrity and history of the property
These investments ensure that the environment remains safe, welcoming, and aligned with the sense of peace and restoration it provides to all who spend time here.
-
Creating a Safe and Restorative Space
Our respite cottage serves as an important resource for individuals who need a place to pause, reset, and receive support in a peaceful setting. This campaign will invest in improving and expanding this space to better meet those needs.
Funding will support:
-
Updating bathroom fixtures and safety features
-
Replacing aging furnace with a new high efficiency system that includes central air conditioning
-
Waterproofing basement areas to protect the cottage and improve long term sustainability
-
Installing a year round porch area to create a therapeutic nature viewing and reflection space
-
Repairing the historic bay window in the primary bedroom
-
Refinishing loft floors
-
Replacing windows throughout the entire cottage for safety, comfort, and energy efficiency
-
Rebuilding loft and stair railings to improve safety and accessibility
These improvements will allow the cottage to more effectively serve as a restorative environment while also creating additional space for small group programming and quiet connection.
-
Culinary Workforce Development
The teaching kitchen will serve as a practical and supportive environment where individuals can gain experience, build confidence, and take meaningful steps forward. This funding will:
-
Renovating the kitchen to include commercial kitchen equipment
-
Installing a teaching island to support wellness, nutrition, and community programming
-
Creating an ADA compliant kitchen bathroom to improve accessibility for all guests and participants
-
A Campaign Rooted in Stewardship and Purpose
While this campaign includes essential infrastructure improvements, its true purpose is deeper.
It is about preserving a special place, ensuring its longevity, and creating a sustainable environment where individuals can reconnect, rebuild, and thrive.
Every investment supports not only the care of this property, but the strength and wellbeing of the community it holds.
